What Are Chakras? (And Why You Might Want to Know About Yours)

If you’ve ever heard someone mention “chakras” and felt a bit unsure what they were talking about — you’re not alone.

The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “disc.” In energy healing traditions, chakras are thought of as spinning centres of energy in your body that influence how you feel physically, emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually.

There are seven main chakras, running from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Each one is linked to different aspects of your life and wellbeing — things like safety, creativity, confidence, relationships, communication, intuition, and your sense of connection to something greater.

When your chakras are balanced and flowing, you tend to feel more grounded, alive, and aligned. When they’re blocked or overwhelmed, you might feel stuck, anxious, heavy, low in energy, or just not quite like yourself.

Think of it like this: your body has a nervous system to carry messages, a digestive system to process food, and — in energy healing terms — an energetic system that carries your life force. Chakras are a key part of that system.

Here’s a simple look at the seven main chakras:

  1. Root Chakra (Base of spine) – Safety, stability, grounding

  2. Sacral Chakra (Lower belly) – Creativity, pleasure, emotions

  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Upper abdomen) – Confidence, personal power

  4. Heart Chakra (Centre of chest) – Love, compassion, connection

  5. Throat Chakra (Throat) – Expression, truth, communication

  6. Brow/Third Eye Chakra (Between the eyebrows) – Intuition, insight

  7. Crown Chakra (Top of the head) – Spiritual connection, awareness

Chakra Pairings

One of the beautiful things about the chakra system is that it’s interconnected. Each chakra doesn’t just function on its own — they work in relationship with each other, like energetic partners.

Certain chakras are especially linked:

  • Root and Heart — When you feel grounded and safe (root), it’s easier to open your heart to love and connection.

  • Sacral and Throat — Your ability to feel and express emotions (sacral) is closely tied to your ability to speak your truth (throat).

  • Solar Plexus and Brow (Third Eye) — When you feel confident and empowered (solar plexus), your intuition and insight (brow) become clearer.

  • Heart and Crown — Love (heart) and spiritual connection (crown) go hand in hand.

That means if one chakra is blocked or out of balance, it may also affect its partner — and bringing them back into harmony can create deep shifts in how you feel and function.

You don’t need to understand all of this at once — just know that your energy system plays a role in how you feel. And if something feels “off,” it might not just be in your body or your mind — it could be energetic too.

Energy healing works to gently bring your chakras back into balance, helping you feel more like you again: clearer, calmer, more centred, and more connected to what matters.
